The texts were received by people in states including Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Ohio, CBS News found. NAACP President Derrick Johnson condemned the messages and said they represent an "alarming increase in vile and abhorrent rhetoric."

Racist text messages are being sent to Black Americans in Ohio and around the nation, telling them they're selected to be enslaved and assigned to pick cotton on a plantation.

The anonymous texts — some referring to the recipients by name — seem to have begun just hours after the election was called for Trump.
