McG, who also directed “The Substance” star Moore in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” helms the film. Lead star King also executive produces, expanding her Netflix collaborations after film “A Family Affair.” This one is more forgettable than either earlier picture.

Fans of the book will know that Uglies is a series, and that the first book ends with a major cliffhanger. In an interview with Decider, Uglies author Scott Westerfeld said he would like to make a Pretties movie for the book’s sequel, but that it will depend on “how many people watch [the first movie], how many times.”

Despite a committed young cast led by Joey King, this unexciting dystopian sci-fi doesn’t say anything all that meaningful about our warped beauty standards.
