From 21 September to 6 October, the largest folk festival in the world takes place on the Theresienwiese. The 189th Oktoberfest will be celebrated for 16 days this year. It kicks off with the traditional barrel tapping by Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter on 21 September at 12 noon in the Schottenhamel Festhalle.

The Oktoberfest doesn’t cost to enter; anyone can wander through the venue without needing a ticket. The reason there are sometimes queues at the entrance is that security personnel check visitors’ bags so that everyone at the Oktoberfest can feel safe and relax.

fairground stores open from Monday to Thursday from 10 am and are open until 11.30 pm. On Fridays and Wednesday, October 2, they are open from 10 am to midnight. On Saturdays from 9 am to midnight, on Sundays and on the public holiday, October 3, from 9 am to 11.30 pm.
